Introduction
Bukit Timah Nature Reserve
• Bukit Timah is one of the largest stands of primary low land dipterocarp forest (a family of hardwood, tropical trees in the forest) in Singapore.
• 1883 : Bukit Timah was one of the first forest reserves established.
• Officially declared as an ASEAN Park on 18 October 2011.
• It is now a part of the prestigious regional network of 30 protected areas, forming the complete spectrum of representative ecosystems in ASEAN, together with Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve.
• Considered as a significant milestone for Bukit Timah Nature Reserve which aspires to be a centre of excellence in tropical forest conservation management.
• A reserve of only 0.2% of our country’s total area or 163 hectares.

Introduction Of Bukit Timah Nature Reserve
· Covering
an area of approximately 3,043 hectares, Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and Central
Catchment Nature Reserve are managed by the Central Nature Reserve Branch of
the National Parks Board.
· As a nature reserves, it is
protected by the Parks & Trees Act 2005 for the conservation of our native biodiversity.
· Bukit Timah Nature Reserve retains as one
of the largest tracts of primary rainforest left in Singapore and it is the home to the Singapore's highest hill, Bukit Timah Hill, at 163.63m.
· The forest has
been a botanical collecting ground for more than a century, where the first
known specimens of many species of Malayan plants were obtained.
· Despite its small size, it
is considered one of the most productive pieces of nature, particularly by
Alfred Russel Walllace, a British naturalist, explorer,geographer, anthropologist
and biologist.
What can students do to preserve the nature reserve?

• Do not infringe on the primary objectives of nature reserves, that is, as a depository of our natural wealth.
• Once every year, voluntary schools can be sent to clean up the nature reserve as part of a Community Involvement Programme (CIP).
• Student Environmental Clubs can visit other schools to educate students on the importance of preserving the nature reserve.
• Student Environmental Clubs can lias with Community Centers to educate the public via events such as public group hikings.
• Students can organize carnivals to raise funds for campaigns to raise public awareness on the preservation of the nature reserve.
• Students can organize tree planting activities in the Bukit Timah Nature Reserves.
• Students can set up a Facebook page to spread/educate netizens on the beauty of Bukit Timah Nature Reserves and hence promote preservation.

As an ASEAN Heritage Park, Bukit Timah Nature Reserve continues to expand its programmes to strengthen its reputation as a premier tropical forest and inspire people to learn more about Singapore’s beautiful rainforests and nature reserves. The importance of national defence where Singapore is our homeland and we must ourselves defend Singapore as no one else will defend her for us. And this is tied in with the need to protect the natural heritage of Singapore as well because it will be lost if we do not protect them.
